USB-C KVM Switch for 2 Computers with HDMI and DisplayPort (201085) – Firmware Update to Fix Compatibility and Performance Issues

Cable Matters released two firmware updates for its USB-C Switch with HDMI and DisplayPort. These updates resolve several compatibility and performance issues. Follow the instructions below to update the device firmware.

                         Please note, if you purchased a new USB-C KVM Switch after 10/29/2022, then your switch is up to date.

                         For optimal performance of the KVM switch, please also install the firmware update found here.

Resolved Issues

This firmware update resolves the following issues:

  • HDR compatibility issues. The firmware update resolves HDR compatibility issues on certain combinations of computers and displays.
  • LG television compatibility issues. The firmware update resolves compatibility issues with certain LG 4K and 8K television models.
  • Dolby Atmos compatibility issues. The firmware update resolves Dolby Atmos audio issues.   
  • 1080p resolution lock on 11th generation Intel systems. The firmware update resolves an issue that locked 11th-generation Intel systems to a maximum resolution of 1080p@60Hz.
  • Issue switching between hosts. This firmware update resolves an issue where no display is shown on the monitor after switching between hosts multiple times. 
  • Compatibility issue with Surface Pro 8. This firmware update resolves a known compatibility issue with the Surface Pro 8 when using previous firmware version.

Firmware Update Instructions

1) Connect the adapter to a USB-C port on a computer or laptop. Then connect a display to the switch's HDMI or DisplayPort port. If you are using a laptop, connect an AC adapter to the laptop. Press the button on the switch to switch to the connected computer. 

2) Click here to download the firmware update tool.

3) Unzip the firmware update tool and launch the “VmmDPTool.exe” program. If a prompt asks to run the program as an Administrator, click yes.

4) In the Debug tab, click the “FW version” button. The “Status” textbox should populate with information about the adapter. Check that the “Firmware version” field is less than  6.05.150.”

5) Click the “FLASH” tab, then click the “Load to FLASH” button. In the file open dialog, select the firmware file and click “Open.” Your firmware file might be different than the file in the picture below. 

6) If a dialog box appears stating the Product ID did not match, click Yes to proceed with the firmware update.

7) Wait for the firmware update process to finish. When the firmware update process finishes, disconnect and reconnect the adapter from the computer. Verify the firmware update by clicking the “FW version” button and checking that the new firmware version is installed.

Firmware Update Troubleshooting

  • If an error message appears when first starting the VmmDPTool.exe program, ensure the program is running as an Administrator and check that the video adapter is connected to a display and the host computer’s video port.
  • If a dialog box appears stating the Product ID did not match, click Yes to proceed with the firmware update.

  • 7/7/22 – Firmware version 6.05.120
    • Resolved a compatibility issue with Dolby Atmos.
    • Resolved a compatibility issue that caused the resolution to lock at 1080p@60Hz on certain Intel systems.
    • Resolved a compatibility issue with HDR.
    • Resolved a compatibility issue with LG televisions.
  • 9/22/2022 - Firmware version 6.05.130
    • Resolved an issue where no display is shown on the monitor after switching between hosts multiple times. 
  • 9/27/2022 - Firmware Version 6.05.140
    • No display on the DP port when both the HDMI and DP ports are used and the switch is connected to a computer with an NVIDIA graphics card.
    • No display on the HDMI port or the HDMI port takes too long to show the screen.
  • 1/9/2023 - Firmware Version 6.05.150
    • Compatibility issue with Surface Pro 8
